Map and Compass 101
Map and Compass 101 is our basic land navigation course. You will learn the basics of using a map and compass to navigate. We cover map reading, pace counts and how to use a compass and protractor to navigate. The course is taught 1 on 1 as are all our courses. You are welcome to being another student if you want such as a spouse or other family member. There is an additional charge for additional students, please contact us in advance for arrangements. Please remember the focus is keeping the class small and specific to your needs and schedule.
The course is an 8 hour field course. We will meet in the field and all teaching will occur in the field.
Map and Compass 101 Content
- Reading a Topographic map
- Using a UTM scale
- Using a compass
- Getting and using a pace count
- Real world practice on a course
Map, Compass and UTM Grid Reader (protractor) are provided for the course. You are welcome to bring your own gear, but be prepared to use the equipment we provide.
The Map and Compass 101 course is a field course. It will require the student to be outside exposed to the elements and to navigate in the uneven terrain of Colorado. Please be prepared to be outside in changing conditions as if you were hiking in the Colorado mountains. If you have any medical conditions that would not allow you to hike strenuously or be outside for long periods of time, please reach out to us in advance before purchasing.

Instructor’s background includes Orienteering and Adventure Racing. Multiple top 5 finishes in the Competition Dynamics 48 hour Sniper Adventure Challenge. Instructor is a current continuing competitor working with active and retired military and special operations.
