Tripod Cleaning Kit
Bison Tactical’s tripod cleaning kit using equipment from J Dewey Rods solves an issue that has plagued shooters and photographers alike for years – rough and gritty tripods. Do you remember how good your tripod felt to adjust when it was brand new? How easy the leg locks were to twist? How smoothly the tubes slid past each other to extend and collapse? Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and in time even the best tripods develop a rougher feel when used in the harsh outdoors. When using quality gear this problem is not usually a flaw with the tripod itself, but instead caused by incomplete maintenance.
Dimensions:
- Rod length is 22″ (excluding handle)
- Small Mop = .615 inch or 15.62 mm
- Medium Mop = .729 inch or 18.52 mm
- Large Mop = 1.6 inch or 40 mm
Mops are compressible, so the above numbers should be considered with a grain of salt as there is a range of compression that can be done.
Many shooters don’t realize that tripods, like their firearms, require regular care and cleaning for optimal performance. Tripod cleaning kits, in fact, were previously nonexistent. Nobody discusses it as passionately as barrel cleaning, and instructions don’t come in the box with your tripod. It’s also quite difficult without proper tools, such as our tripod cleaning kit. Included in the kit is a handled rod, one extension, and three differently sized mops. After disassembling the tripod legs you are able to scrub the interior of the tubes with water-dampened mops. This will remove the accumulated dust and dirt, while a damp microfiber cloth can be used to handle the exterior of the legs.
After cleaning, use the tripod cleaning kit’s mops and a silicone-based lubricant inside and outside of the legs. DO NOT USE OIL-BASED LUBRICANTS ON YOUR TRIPOD LEGS. Oil-based lubricants will only serve as a sticky film to trap grime and more rapidly bind up your tripod in the future. Spray-on silicone and silicone impregnated rags are the easiest available options.
